Diving into Coron's top three hidden lagoons and lakes

by : Nicole Brown posted :

People travel to Palawan for its beaches but the real highlight of a Coron adventure is a trip to its lagoons. Below are three of the top lagoons and lakes in the Coron area that each provide a one-of-a-kind experience that you won't want to miss.

    Twin Lagoon

There are many beautiful hot spots to visit when scoping out the Philippines but when it comes to the Twin Lagoon, this is a non-negotiable. Noted for the stunning clarity and comfortable waters, the twin lagoon is home to many creatures who enjoy brackish waters. Visitors can expect to see fiddler crabs, tropical and ocean fish alike along with the occasional predator that wanders a little too close into the lagoon.

Midday is the best time of day to visit as that's when the clarity is best. However, the point where the cold freshwater meets the warm sea water becomes blurry during the mixing. Popular among tourists and locals, the water is warm and one can just grab a life jacket and bop around all day in the perfect degree water. And the best part is that this destination offers two lagoons in one so novice snorkelers grab your kit as there's tons to explore.

A scuba diver's must-do experience, Barracuda Lake provides a dive like no other. Known as one of the cleanest lakes in all of Asia, these crystal clear turquoise waters won’t disappoint. But aside from the great clarity and colourful fish abound, the most interesting thing about the Barracuda lake is the thermoclines. Since this lake has both fresh and saltwater feeding into it, the hot and cold waters layer over each other and create a diving sensory experience that will literally have you go from hot to cold.

Best to forgo the dive suit as these hot layers will be too hot. Most adventurers just wear their regular swim suit or a light skin suit paired with their BCDs for the diving adventure. And if you'd like to press your luck and catch a glimpse of a barracuda during your dive, venture into the caves as this is where the barracuda are said to reside. But before you go, make sure you bring along an experienced dive master so that you'll have fun as well as be safe.

If you've visited the Twin Lagoon and the Barracuda Lake, then ending your trip at Kayangan Lake is a no-brainer. Dubbed the cleanest lake in all of Asia, the bottom of this body of water can actually be seen just by looking standing next to the lake and looking down. Best of all, aside from swimming, snorkelling and taking in the rays, there are also mountains around the lake with concrete steps that if followed will lead you towards a breathtaking view of a different kind.

What to bring

Be sure to pack your snorkeling and/or diving gear, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, sunhat and a fresh pair of clothes. Even if you're not a huge swimmer, once you see these lakes and lagoons, you won't be able to stop yourself from diving in!
